CHICAGO, Ill. – An overtime goal in the 100th minute gave the University of Chicago women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over North Park University on Wednesday.
The No. 11-ranked Maroons (6-0-0) clinched their second overtime win of the season, while the Vikings fell to 2-5-0.
UChicago's offense struck first at the 9:16 mark. Junior midfielder Naomi Pacalin found senior forward Meghan Derken with a pass and Derken finished the run with her third goal of the season. Junior midfielder Nicole Mullen nearly doubled the lead when she hit the crossbar with a shot at 23:01.
The Maroons went into halftime with the 1-0 lead. UChicago fired off 10 shots in the half and drew four corner kicks, compared to four shots and no corners for the Vikings.
In the 71st minute, North Park found the equalizer. A yellow card was assessed in the box and the hosts were awarded a penalty kick, which was converted by Elisabeth Heidenstrom. The Maroons kept pressing for the go-ahead goal and peppered the Vikings with 16 more shots in the second half. Freshman forward Caroline Olivero came very close when her shot ricocheted off the crossbar at 87:30.
The two teams finished regulation tied at 1-1 and went into overtime. UChicago kept up the offensive pressure and eventually broke through with the game-winning score at the 99:03 mark. Mullen tallied her third goal of the year off a corner kick from freshman defender Mia Calamari, who registered her team-leading fourth assist.
The Maroons dominated the stat sheet in both shots (29-8) and corner kicks (6-0). Senior goalkeeper Jacinda Reid worked the first half with no saves and no goals. Senior goalie Mallory Morse (4-0-0) took over in the second half and overtime, totaling one save and one goal allowed.
