ATLANTA, Ga. – Two goals in the first half gave the No. 14-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team a 2-1 win at No. 5-ranked Emory University on Saturday.
The Maroons (10-2-0 overall) improved to 1-1-0 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Eagles (7-1-3) dropped to 0-1-1 in league play.
UChicago went up 1-0 on an Emory own goal in the 18th minute. A free kick was sent into the box and the ball bounced off the defender's head and in. The game was then delayed by lightning late in the first half. The break didn't faze UChicago as the team scored immediately upon restart. Junior forward Julia Ozello sent a low pass into the box that was deflected to junior forward Mary Bittner, who scored her fourth goal of the season.
Facing a 2-0 deficit in the second half, Emory pushed hard to get on the scoreboard. The Eagles broke through in the 69th minute with a Karina Rodriguez goal off a corner kick. But the Maroon defense held strong for the remainder and gave the team its 10th win of the season. Senior goalkeeper Mallory Morse (6-0-0) played all 90 minutes in goal with six saves and one goal allowed.
Emory led shots 15-8 and also corner kicks 8-6.
