CHICAGO, Ill. – The No. 16-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 2-0 victory over Brandeis University on Sunday.
The Maroons (13-3-1 overall, 4-1-1 UAA) earned their tenth shutout of the year and remain in second place in the conference. The Judges dropped to 12-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the UAA.
UChicago's six seniors were announced on the field before the start of the afternoon game – Meghan Derken, Katharine Hedlund, Sara Kwan, Mallory Morse, Jacinda Reid and Katie Shivanandan. The seniors have recorded an overall mark of 45-20-6 (.676 winning percentage) over the past four years.
Nine minutes into the game, the Maroons nearly took the lead when junior midfielder Naomi Pacalin's shot nailed the crossbar and bounced back. Freshman midfielder Kelsey Moore put the home team ahead about 18 minutes later. A pass into the box squirted out of the prone goalkeeper's hands and Moore was there to put it away for her first career collegiate goal.
Moore struck again from 16 yards out just before halftime in the 44th minute. Freshman defender Whitley Cargile stole a Brandeis pass in the attacking third and lofted the ball over the defense to Moore, who was unmarked on the right side of the box. She then tallied her second goal of the contest into the lower left corner.
Brandeis made a concerted offensive push over the final 20 minutes of the match and got several good looks at goal. UChicago senior goalkeeper Mallory Morse was in position each time to deny the attempts and clinch the victory. Morse made four saves in the second half. Senior goalkeeper Jacinda Reid (5-2-1) got the win after making one save in the opening 45 minutes. Shots were even at 12 apiece in the match while UChicago led corner kicks 3-1.
