Maroon women's soccer loses late at IWU 1-0

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – In a rematch from last year's NCAA postseason, the University of Chicago women's soccer team lost 1-0 at No. 9-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University on Thursday.

The Maroons fell to 5-3-0 on the season and the Titans improved to 8-1-0. UChicago leads the all-time series 9-8-1.

Thursday night featured two opponents who met in the Round of 16 at the 2014 NCAA Tournament. IWU came away the winner 3-2 in double overtime last November.

The first half played out even statistically with each team taking two shots. The Maroons led corner kicks 4-1 but neither side could crack the scoreboard.

Tied 0-0 early in the second half, the Titans fired off six shots in the opening 10 minutes. The game remained scoreless until the 85:41 mark, when Skyler Tomko chipped the ball in to give IWU a 1-0 lead that it would hold onto until the final horn.

The hosts outshot the Maroons 11-5 and also led corner kicks 5-4. UChicago freshman goalkeeper Piper Mik (5-3-0) absorbed the loss while making four saves and allowing one goal.
