ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Despite several close calls offensively during the game, the University of Chicago women's soccer team was held off the scoreboard and lost 1-0 at the University of Rochester on Saturday.
The Maroons dropped to 8-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Yellowjackets improved to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 on conference play.
UChicago had the run of play in the first half, which produced several dangerous chances. Freshman midfielder Jenna McKinney produced two opportunities that were blocked, and sophomore forward Madori Spiker's breakaway chance missed just wide.
The two teams went into halftime knotted at zeros. The Maroons led shots 8-4 and produced an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
However, the Yellowjackets capitalized on a free kick and scored in the 53rd minute of the second half. McKenzie Runyon tallied her third goal of the year after controlling a free kick pass and sending an 18-yard strike to the top corner.
The Maroons pressed down the stretch and nearly bagged the equalizer in the 80th minute. But sophomore forward Hayley Thompson's shot inside the box was saved by the diving goalkeeper.
UChicago ended the game in the lead in both shots (13-7) and corners (12-3). All four of the team's losses have occurred on the road this season. Freshman goalkeeper Piper Mik (8-4-0 record) made one save and allowed one goal.
