CHICAGO – An ensemble effort by the University of Chicago women's soccer team produced one of its most dominating performances ever in a 9-0 victory over Aurora University on Sunday.
The No. 21-ranked Maroons have won their opening two games of the season by a combined 11-0 margin. The Spartans evened their record at 1-1.
Mia Calamari aided the scoring binge by providing three assists on the day. With her second assist, the junior forward broke the school record for career assists. The previous record of 29 was held by Jacqui DeLeon (2002-05).
UChicago's nine goals were the most scored by the team since an 11-0 victory over Benedictine University in 2002. Additionally, the Maroons dished out a school-record 11 assists on the day – the old mark of eight assists was set versus North Park University in 2000.
The Maroons dominated in every facet of Sunday's game. The home side pressed forward with urgency and overwhelmed Aurora's defenders. Pinpoint passes in the final third found their mark time and again to set up an avalanche of shots on goal. For the game, UChicago outshot Aurora 38-3 with a 21-1 advantage in shots on frame.
Calamari was at the center of the attack all throughout the first half. The junior took the majority of the team's 16 corner kicks, and three times she helped deliver the score. The corner kick goals came in the 8th, 13th and 33rd minute. The Maroons spread the scoring out as well with seven different players tallying a goal. The Spartans added one to the total with an own goal off UChicago's corner kick in the 61st minute.
Junior midfielder Kelsey Moore was the lead scorer, producing a pair in the 22nd and 63rd minutes. Freshman midfielder Mackenzie Peebles posted one goal and two assists while the freshman trio of forward Adrianna Vera, midfielder Rachel Dias and defender Julia Lodoen each totaled one goal and one assist. Junior forward Madori Spiker and sophomore midfielder Jenna McKinney scored one goal apiece. Freshman midfielder Hanna Watkins garnered two assists and senior midfielder Sophia Kim added one assist.
