CHICAGO – The University of Chicago women's soccer team rained down shots on Augustana College and put up a pristine defensive effort on the other half of the field en route to a 3-0 victory on Saturday.
The No. 4-ranked Maroons (8-0 record) shut out their sixth opponent of the season. The No. 20-ranked Vikings (5-3) lost their third-straight match.
UChicago put its foot on the gas offensively and never let up. The hosts fired off 30 shots in the match – the third time they have taken at least 30 this season. Augustana was held to three shots on the day.
With the run of play consistently in Augustana's defensive half, UChicago put four shots on the goal in the opening 20 minutes. Sophomore midfielder Jenna McKinney broke through at the 21:35 mark with a one-on-one against the goalkeeper. Senior midfielder Sophia Kim assisted by poking the ball through a crowd in the middle of the box. Once the ball came out, McKinney pounced on it behind the line of defenders and swiftly put the ball in the back of the net.
The home side kept pounding away, putting up shot after shot with a number of narrow misses skimming past the post and over the crossbar. The insurance tally eventually came in the 71st minute. Junior forward Mia Calamari jumped on a defensive turnover in space above the right corner of the box and rocketed a rising line drive right under the crossbar and in.
The day's final tally came courtesy of McKinney once again. The midfielder scored her seventh goal in front off an assist by junior forward Caroline Olivero at the 77:30 mark. McKinney recorded her second multi-goal game of the season – she is currently riding a five-match point streak. Calamari is the team leader with points in seven-straight contests.
Augustana's best chance of the day came back in the 59th minute with a mini-breakaway. But UChicago freshman goalkeeper Katie Donovan was in position to swallow up the chance. Donovan made two saves to improve to 8-0 while registering her fourth shutout.
Corner kicks ended in UChicago's favor by an 8-0 margin. The Maroons finished with 15 shots on goal.
