CHICAGO – The No. 1-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team went on a scoring binge at Illinois Institute of Technology, emerging with an 8-0 triumph on Thursday night.
The No. 1-ranked Maroons maintained their perfect record at 15-0. The Scarlet Hawks fell to 6-10-1.
The eight goals were UChicago's most in a game since defeating Aurora University 9-0 in September 2016. The team posted a season-high 45 shots, including 20 on goal. Illinois Tech was limited to two shots overall.
The visitors fired off 10 shots in the opening 18 minutes, and finally broke through on a penalty kick by senior midfielder Kelsey Moore in the 20th minute. Four minutes later, sophomore midfielder Hanna Watkins tallied a goal off senior midfielder Mia Calamari's corner kick. Calamari ended up with three assists over the course of the match.
After the break, the Maroons doubled their scoring efforts. Senior forward Madori Spiker, Calamari and junior midfielder Jenna McKinney all converted their attempts between the 50th and 62nd minutes. Vera closed things out in the 85th minute with an assist by freshman forward Casey Jervier.
The Maroons also finished with a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Donovan (12-0 record) played the first half between the pipes. Freshman Miranda Malone and sophomore Sydney Jones divided up the final 45 minutes of play. The defense recorded its 11th shutout of the year and sixth in-a-row.
