UChicago Women's Soccer Falls to Grove City, 2-1, in NCAA First Round

DANVILLE, Ky.— In an NCAA Division III Tournament match that came down to the wire, a late goal by Grove City (Pa.) College proved to be the game-winner to end the University of Chicago's season in Saturday's First Round contest.

The Maroons concluded their season with a 13-5-1 overall record after making the program's 18th NCAA Tournament appearance.

Grove City (17-3-1) scored the game's first goal, an unassisted strike by Ruby Mattson, in the 25'. It didn't take long for UChicago to answer.

Just five minutes later, first-year Nicole Willing provided the equalizer, connecting on an assist from Katie Jasminski in the 29' that knotted the game at 1-all.

That's how it stood for the next 56 minutes, until the Wolverines broke the draw. With UChicago unable to capitalize on several scoring chances, Grove City's Maggie Williams proved to be the hero, beating the Chicago defense with her unassisted shot in the 86'.

The game itself proved lopsided in the team statistical category, with UChicago dominating the offensive pace with 29 shots to Grove City's 6, including a 14-4 in the shot on goal category.

The Maroons totaled 11 corner kicks and held the Wolverines to zero, though Grove City's keeper recorded 13 saves in a winning effort.

Senior Jenna McKinney, one of UChicago's most decorated players in program history, totaled six shots, with two on goal. She finishes her career with 43 goals – 17 of them game-winners – and 107 points.

The 43 goals and 107 points stand second all-time in UChicago history.

The Maroons also send off five seniors: McKinney, Madison Navarro, Dana Ulrich, Sydney Mathis and Naomi Weiner.

Grove City advances to Sunday's regional final, where it will take on the winner between host Centre College and College of Wooster.
