NAPERVILLE, Ill. – With just five minutes to play in regulation, it was sophomore Adriana Shutler who delivered the game-winner for the No. 20 University of Chicago women's soccer team in Tuesday's 2-1 nonleague thriller on the road.
With the game tied at 1-all after a late North Central score in the second period, Maroons' junior Katie Jasminski broke away from her defender and took the ball to the middle of the field, perfectly threading a pass ahead to a wide-open Shutler who connected, beating the Cardinals' keeper to the right in the 85'.
That would be enough for the Maroons (4-1) to hang on and escape with a win in regulation after the host Cardinals (4-2-1) threatened to push the contest into overtime.
Senior Hanna Watkins netted her fourth goal of the season to give UChicago a first-half lead in the 31'. After the Maroons earned a corner kick, classmate Rachel Dias delivered a perfect ball to the far side of the box to find a Watkins, who twisted a header past the keeper to make it 1-0, UChicago.
That score would stand all the way until the 75,' when North Central's Allyson Viederis connected on a highlight score from 30 yards out. Cardinals' teammate Kacie Moran sent a ball from behind midfield to a sprinting Viederis, who sent a ball – in stride – from the 20-yard line that found the back of the upper 90 to tie the game.
The Maroons dominated the game in shots (14-4) and shots on goal (7-1), plus earned five corner kicks while the UChicago defense didn't allow one for the hosts.
It was Shutler's second goal of the year and just her fourth of her career, but also her first game-winner.
