CHICAGO – The University of Chicago women's soccer team used all 24 players and five different Maroons scored in Saturday's 5-0 win over previously undefeated Pitt-Greensburg in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Maroons (13-2-3) advance to Sunday's regional final, where they will take on Augsburg, a 1-0 winner in overtime over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Match time is set for 1 p.m. CT at Stagg Field grass.
Senior Hanna Watkins kicked off the scoring frenzy with her team-leading 11th goal of the season in the 17'. Teammate Katie Jasminski set her up perfectly, leaving the ball outside the box for a wide-open Watkins, who finished to the upper left 90 to make it 1-0 UChicago early.
Sophomore Nicole Kaspi added the next score, breaking away from the defense with the help of a perfect Rachel Dias pass in the 22'. Nicole Willing would later make it 3-0, Maroons, just before the break. In the 44', UChicago first-year Bella Mahoney crossed a ball into the middle meant for Nikola Charouzova, but it skirted past the sophomore and landed on the foot of a sprinting Willing, wide-open at the far post.
The second half proved to be all Maroons, who finished the game with a 36-2 shot advantage – 22-1 on goal. Bri Fadden (Willing assist) and Charouzova (Fadden assist) would add two more scores, in the 68' and 79', as UChicago emptied its bench in a total team effort.
Pitt-Greensburg, winners of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference regular-season and postseason titles, finish its season with a 19-1-1 record.
The winner of Sunday's regional will advance to the Round of 16.
