Maroons swimmers and divers own second place after third day of UAA Championships

Day 3 Results

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago men's and women's swimmers and divers both occupy second place following the third day of the UAA Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday.

Records continued to fall at an impressive pace for the second-straight day in the Myers-McLoraine pool at UChicago. A total of six conference and 10 pool marks were set during the course of Friday's competition.

Emory University still leads the field with 1301.5 points for the men and 1314 points for the women. UChicago has scored 893.5 points on the men's side and 987.5 points on the women's side.

It was a successful day for the Maroons as they tallied one conference record, one pool record, three UAA champions, nine All-UAA performers and 20 NCAA B-cuts.

The three-meter men's dive was dominated by UChicago divers, who took three of the top four spots. Matthew Staab won his second UAA title of the meet and broke a conference record with a score of 536.60. Teammate Bobby Morales took second place with a score of 524.10 and Tony Restaino was fourth with 517.75.

Matthew Veldman won the 100-yard butterfly by only 0.04 seconds, while Eric Hallman won the 200-yard freestyle for his second conference title in as many days. Bryan Bunning took second place in three different events (100-yard backstroke, 200-yard medley relay, 800-yard freestyle relay).

The UChicago women picked up a trio of runner-up finishes and a third-place showing. Jen Law placed three times total in the 100-yard backstroke (second), the 200-yard medley relay (second), and the 100-yard butterfly (third). Ciara Hu took runner-up in the 400-yard IM in a time that would have bettered the previous pool record by almost one second.
