CHICAGO, Ill. -- Four University of Chicago student-athletes earned University Athletic Assocation (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors in men's diving, women's diving, women's tennis and men's track & field on Monday.
Over the weekend at the 2013 UAA Swimming and Diving Championships, Matthew Staab won two UAA titles and was named UAA Diver of the Year. Staab won the three-meter dive with a conference-record score of 536.60, and his winning one-meter dive score was 487.75.
Fellow diver Becky Schmidt was named UAA Diver of the Year as well thanks to her effort at the UAA Championships. Schmidt broke the conference and pool record in the one-meter dive with a score of 496.10. That mark beat her nearest competition by more than 64 points. The senior also took second place in the one-meter dive with a score of 449.10.
Megan Tang nabbed the weekly honor for women's tennis by winning both her matches at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles on Saturday. The sophomore was victorious in her singles match 6-2, 6-1 and 8-5 in doubles. The Maroons defeated NCAA Division I opponent University of Wisconsin-Green Bay 6-1.
Michael Bennett garnered men's field athlete of the week from his effort at Saturday's Margaret Bradley Invitational. Bennett set a UChicago school record in the pole vault, winning the event with a UAA conference-best height of 4.68 meters (15 feet, 4.25 inches). The freshman leads the conference by 21 centimeters (8.25 inches).
