CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago swim teams got off to a strong start as hosts of the three-day Phoenix Fall Classic on Friday. The women stand in first place with 127 points and the men are second with 92 points in the 14-team field.
Six event finals were raced on Friday, and the Maroons figured prominently in five of them. Senior Kathleen Taylor narrowly won the 1,650-yard freestyle, beating the runner up by 1.5 seconds in a time of 17:24.27. Teammate Karen Chu was third in 17:39.23.
UChicago's men won the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:22.40. The relay was comprised of Bryan Bunning, James Taylor, Matthew Veldman and Eric Hallman. In the same race, UChicago's women (Andrea McPike, Jennifer Hill, Ciara Hu, Elizabeth Millen) took third in 3:59.53.
The Maroons were runners-up in 200-yard freestyle relay in both genders. The men (Hallman, Andrew Salomon, Thomas Meek, Veldman) finished in 1:25.19, which was only 0.05 seconds behind the winners. The UChicago women (Hill, McPike, Jenna Harris, Millen) captured second in 1:37.74.
