CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago swimming and diving teams began the first day of the Phoenix Fall Classic with seven NCAA B cut times on Friday.
The Maroons are serving as hosts of the three-day meet, which features eight total participating teams. Six events were contested in the evening of the first day and the home team emerged with four victories.
The men's 200-yard freestyle relay team blasted past the nearest competitors by nearly three seconds. The foursome of junior Thomas Meek, junior Andrew Homere, sophomore Mantim Leeand junior Matthew Veldman recorded an NCAA B cut time of 1:22.92. Meek's lead freestyle leg was also good for a B cut time as well. Later on, Meek and Veldman were two legs of the winning 400-yard medley relay alongside freshman Alex Lin and senior Andrew Angeles. The relay's NCAA B cut time was 3:23.03.
The Maroon women posted four NCAA B cuts of their own. Sophomore Cara LoPiano (17:19.11) and junior Karen Chu (17:23.74) finished one-two in the 1,650-yard freestyle with NCAA marks. The 400-yard medley relay team of freshman Melissa Bischoff, senior Jennifer Hill, sophomore Abby Erdmann and sophomore Maya Scheidl won in 3:56.09. Bischoff's 100-yard backstroke time in the medley relay was a B cut, as was Alison Wall's 100-yard backstroke mark in the second-place relay.
