Maroon swimming and diving wins Phoenix Fall Classic

CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago swimming and diving teams won the three-day Phoenix Fall Classic in convincing fashion on Sunday. Over the course of the weekend, the Maroons totaled two school records, three pool records and 38 NCAA B-cut times.

UChicago's women were first out of seven teams with 957 points, while Hillsdale College was runner-up with 630 points. The UChicago men were first out of six teams with 1,085 points, followed by Lake Forest College with 514 points.

On Sunday, the Maroons posted 14 event victories – eight by the men and six by the women – along with 14 NCAA B-cuts.

Freshman Melissa Bischoff highlighted the proceedings by breaking a school and pool record in the 100-yard backstroke. She swam a blistering time of 55.79, which broke the pool record by 0.37 seconds and the school record by 0.34 seconds. Bischoff's mark will qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships at the end of the season.

The men's 200-yard breaststroke was dominated by UChicago, which swept the top four spots with four B-cut times. Sophomore Rolland Lee took first in 2:04.66, followed by senior Andrew Angeles (2:04.91), sophomore Matthew Chen (2:05.32) and junior James Taylor (2:05.41).

Three male divers posted NCAA provisional scores on the three-meter board. Senior Matthew Staab led the way with a winning score of 512.40. Freshman Dean Boures was second (457.55) and senior Kevin Steffes was third (441.50).

The women's 400-yard IM produced two NCAA B-cuts with winner sophomore Megan Wall (4:33.68) and runner-up junior Ciara Hu (4:34.53). Sophomore Alison Wall achieved a B-cut in the 200-yard freestyle with a winning mark of 1:52.56.

Junior Matthew Veldman produced a B-cut of 49.86 in the 100-yard butterfly, and fellow junior Thomas Meek posted a B-cut of 20.74 in the 50-yard freestyle. The men's 400-yard freestyle relay (sophomore Mantim Lee, Meek, sophomore Jonathan Simoneau, Veldman) was victorious with a B-cut mark of 3:03.77.
