CHICAGO – As hosts of the Phoenix Fall Classic, the University of Chicago swimming and diving teams got off to a red-hot start by winning five out of six contested events on Friday evening.

The first day of the three-day meet saw plenty of Maroon at the top of the board. The men's 200-yard freestyle relay provided the biggest highlight early on by winning in a time of 1:22.50. That time provided by the quartet of freshman Alexander Farrell, senior Thomas Meek, freshman Winston Wang and senior Andrew Homere was an NCAA qualifying mark in 2015 and only 0.28 seconds off from the pool record.

The men's 400-yard medley relay was also successful with a winning time of 3:22.12 – an NCAA B-cut mark. The relay was made up of Wang, freshman Keenan Novis, Meek and Farrell. Freshman Michael Todd finished first in the 1,650-yard freestyle with an NCAA B-cut time of 16:10.58.

UChicago's women also swept the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:36.85) and the 400-yard medley relay (3:53.91). Freshman Naomy Grand'Pierre swam the opening leg on the 200 free and the anchor leg on the 400 medley.

While the Maroons did not win the 1,650-yard freestyle, two of their swimmers posted NCAA B-cut times. Senior Karen Chu was second in 17:25.93 and junior Cara LoPiano was third in 17:30.27.
