CHICAGO – In their final tune-up before the conference championships, the University of Chicago swimming and diving teams both earned team victories at the two-day Midwest Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
The Maroon men were first of five participating teams with 538 points scored. Washington University-St. Louis was second with 474 points. UChicago's women were also first with 503 points, followed by runner-up University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with 418 points.
The men's squad picked up four event wins on the weekend. Sophomore Alex Lin led a Maroon contingent that swept the top three spots in the 100-yard breaststroke, with a time of 59.05 that won by a mere 0.03 seconds. Freshman Keenan Novis topped the 400-yard IM in 4:09.57, and senior James Taylor was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.28). The 400-yard medley relay team – comprised of sophomore Jack Rodman, senior Thomas Meek, senior Gabriel Nathan and freshman Andrew Longwell – posted a time of 3:38.15.
On the women's side, UChicago tallied three wins and a pair of one-two finishes. Senior Ciara Hu captured the 400-yard IM in a time of 4:41.32. Freshman Christina Cheng triumphed in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.92 and sophomore Florina Yang took the 100-yard butterfly in 59.47.
