CHICAGO – Both University of Chicago swimming and diving squads led their respective fields and the Maroons recorded a total of five NCAA B-cuts and set two school records to open the first day of the Phoenix Fall Classic Friday at Meyers-McLoraine Pool.
Sophomore Byrne Litschgi set a new record in his 100-yard backstroke that led off the 400-medley relay, swimming a time of 23.28 seconds in a mark that should qualify him for the NCAA Division III Championships. The Maroons medley relay team of Litschgi, Reona Yamaguchi, Michael Todd and Alexander Farrell not only won the event but also set a new program mark and NCAA qualifying time, clocking in at 3:16.87.
Charlie Gallagher (1,650 freestyle), Gillian Gagnard (100 backstroke that led the 400-medley relay on the women's side) and the winning women's 400-yard medley team of Gagnard, Margaret Wolfson, Hadley Ackerman and Hannah Eastman also made a NCAA B-cut times to highlight UChicago's performances.
In total, the Maroons captured wins in all six events Friday. The women led the 10-team field with 130 points and the men led its eight-team field with 115 points.
The three-day meet continues Saturday and Sunday, with dual sessions starting at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. CT each day.
