CHICAGO – The University of Chicago swimming and diving teams kicked off their last meet of the 2018 calendar year with Friday night action as hosts of the three-day Phoenix Fall Classic.
The Maroons captured five wins in the six events contested in the evening session. A total of 12 teams are taking part in the multi-day meet.
The men's 400-yard medley relay team posted a NCAA B-cut time of 3:17.47 that beat out a mark that qualified for the NCAA nationals last year. Junior Byrne Litschgi provided the biggest highlight leading off the relay by setting a new school record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 48.50. First-year Martin Baffico also put up a personal best of 49.36 as the opening leg of his quartet's 400-yard medley relay. Both marks are NCAA B-cuts that were under times that qualified for the 2018 NCAA national meet.
The women's 400-yard medley relay equaled the feat of NCAA B-cut and a lower time than NCAA qualifying than last year, finishing first in 3:50.08. First-year Tyler Mandrell put up a personal best and B-cut time of 56.74 in the 100-yard backstroke leg.
The men's 200-yard freestyle relay surpassed last year's NCAA qualifying time with a B-cut of 1:21.43.
In the women's 1,650-yard freestyle, sophomore Taylor Hammill's personal-best time of 17:24.55 won the event and was a NCAA B-cut. The men's 1,650-yard freestyle saw first-year Georgios Tzortzis post a personal-best NCAA B-cut time of 16:07.63.
