CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – Agnes Lo pulled off the repeat of historic proportions to capture Saturday's 3-meter dive NCAA Division III regional championship and all four of the University of Chicago women's divers placed in the Top 5 to complete the competition at Wabash College.
Lo, who also won the 1-meter diving title on Friday, scored a 477.25 to win the 27-diver event by 39 points. Behind her was first-year Maroon Elizabeth Cron (438.05), who nabbed her second-straight runner-up finish.
First-year Alice Saparov (432.25) took third and senior Anna Girlich (425.05) was fifth to give the UChicago women diving team its best-ever performance at the regional meet, as it's likely all four will qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships, though official qualifiers won't be released until Monday.
"The results from this NCAA qualifying meet were a vision I held for these young women since November," UChicago Head Diving Coach Becky Benson said. "However, it would have never been realized without a team of divers who were completely committed to the philosophy of our swimming and diving team and that of the University of Chicago Athletics family."
Based on available records, Lo's two regional championships are the first (two) for the Maroon women's divers since the NCAA moved to the Zone format. Should all four divers qualify for nationals as expected, that would also be a first: the most the women's team had ever qualified before was one.
