KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In a dramatic singles final that came down to the wire in the third set, University of Chicago women's tennis player Marjorie Antohi took runner-up at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships.
The No. 2-seeded Antohi faced off with No. 3-seed Lauren O'Malley of John Carroll University in Monday morning's bout. The Maroon junior strung together four-straight games in the first set, but O'Malley rallied back from a 5-3 deficit to capture a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaker.
In the second set, Antohi took another lead at 5-2 and evened the match up with a 6-4 win. The third set was back-and-forth throughout, but O'Malley secured a service break to close out the victory, 6-4.
Antohi previously finished second at last year's ITA Regional singles final to teammate Claire Handa.
"The team overall had an outstanding weekend, culminating in finalists in both singles and doubles," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "While I'm sure that there's some disappointment among the players for not winning their last matches, it certainly wasn't for a lack of effort. The entire team should be proud of the way they competed and represented themselves and their university. This was a great way to start our year and build momentum as we finish the fall and head towards the dual match portion of our season."
