KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The University of Chicago women's tennis team kicked off day one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships with an impressive start on Thursday.
The Maroons brought five singles players and three doubles teams to compete in the 64-player singles bracket and 32-team doubles draw.
On the familiar courts of Kalamazoo College, doubles excelled in their morning action. Catherine Xu and Eugenia Lee came in as the top-seeded duo, thanks in part to qualifying for the NCAA doubles tournament last spring. Xu and Lee made quick work of their Millikin University opponents, sweeping 8-0.
In singles, UChicago kept three singles players in the hunt with 2-0 records in the opening rounds. Sophomore Nicole Semenov, who entered as the No. 5 seed, made particularly fast work of her opponents by only dropping one game over the course of four sets (6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1). Xu was hot on her trail in terms of speed to get off the court – the Maroon junior only surrendered two combined games of her own as the No. 9 seed. Fellow No. 9-seed Park topped her opposition from Denison University and Kenyon College by scores of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-4, respectively.
UChicago is back in action on Friday morning with the round of 16 and quarterfinals in both brackets.
