KALAMAZOO, Mich. – For the first time since 2011, the University of Chicago women's tennis team swept both doubles and singles titles on Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships.
The last Maroons who accomplished the feat were Kendra Higgins in singles and Higgins/Jennifer Kung in doubles.
First-year doubles team Claudia Ng and Perene Wang, who came in as the No. 5 seeds, made the championship match by dispatching the No. 2 seeds from Hope College by an 8-3 margin. In the final, the UChicago duo took down No. 3-seed Kenyon College by scores of 6-4, 6-3.
In singles play, the Maroons boasted three of the four semifinalists. No. 5-seeded sophomore Nicole Semenov was tasked with the No. 1 seed from Kenyon, Erika Oku. Semenov played lights out in the first set winning 6-0, before her opponent retired from the match due to injury in the second set.
The other semifinal was an all-Maroon affair with No. 9 seeds Lauren Park and Catherine Xu. Park grabbed the first set 6-3, but Xu countered with a 7-6 (7-0) tiebreaker in the second set. The third set saw Park prevail 6-4.
The Semenov vs. Park championship singles match is scheduled to be played on Monday, Sept. 23 at 11:00 AM on UChicago's Stagg Courts.
