Kris Powell enters his sixth season with the UChicago tennis staff in 2020-21.
In his time with both tennis programs, Maroon players have tallied 32 All-American awards while reaching the NCAA semifinals three times and the NCAA quarterfinals on seven occasions.
Powell was born and raised in Chicago. He has played tennis competitively since age 10, and grew up practicing on UChicago's courts as a junior-level player. While in juniors, he was ranked in the top 100 in the midwest. In high school, he got to the round of 16 at the Illinois state tournament.
Powell graduated from Texas A&M Prairie View, where he played NCAA Division I tennis on an athletic scholarship. While competing in the SWAC league, Powell was awarded an MVP award, won two conference championships and competed in the NCAA Tennis Championships in 2010.
Powell is currently working with multiple junior state and sectional ranked players and is working toward his USTA High Performance Certification.
Recently, he was employed as a tennis pro at the Peachtree Tennis Center in Peachtree City, Ga. He is also a coach at XS Tennis, where he trained as a junior.
