WALTHAM, Mass. – The University of Chicago women's track and field team stands in second place while the men's team is in fifth place after day one of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday.
The day's action was mostly made up of preliminary races, with the majority of the finals set to occur on Saturday. The Maroons found success on the women's side on day one by finishing in the top three in four different events. Sophomore Nkemdilim Nwaokolo led the way with a UAA championship in the weight throw. Her toss of 15.21 meters flew past the field as the runner-up finished 1.18 meters behind. Nwaokolo also won the indoor weight throw title as a freshman in 2013.
UChicago was well represented in the women's long jump. Sophomore Rachael Jackson finished second (5.41 meters) and junior Pam Yu (5.12 meters) was third. Freshman Jadylin Tolda was third in the pole vault at 3.42 meters and senior Sarah Peluse also ran third in the 5,000 meters.
On the men's side, UChicago's top finish was a third-place showing in the distance medley relay. Junior Kevin Vollrath, sophomore Ryan Manzuk, freshman Nicholas Nielsen and sophomore Michael Frasco combined to record a time of 10:13.46.
