Maroon track and field wins trio of events at first day of UAA Outdoor Championships

CHICAGO – The University of Chicago track and field teams opened up action at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championships with three victories on Saturday.

In the team standings, the Maroon women are first with 69 points and the UChicago men are third with 33 points.

A total of 14 event finals were contested on the day. UChicago's biggest success came in the women's long jump, where the hosts swept the top three spots. On her final leap of the event, freshman Laura Darcey put up the winning distance of 5.60 meters. Fellow freshman Mary Martin was the runner-up at 5.40 meters and junior Vivian Barclay rounded out the All-UAA trio in third place (5.24 meters).

Junior Claire Costelloe ran past the field en route to the women's 10,000 meter championship. Her winning time of 36:52.55 was best by 52 seconds. Freshman Maggie Boudreau was also an All-UAA placer in third (37:51.12).

The Maroon men were led by senior Andrew Maneval in the throws. Maneval won the shot put with a heave of 15.34 meters and was also All-UAA in the hammer throw with a third-place finish (47.36 meters).

UChicago's women posted three additional runner-up finishes. The 4x800-meter relay was second in 9:25.20 with the quartet of junior Khia Kurtenbach, junior Megan Verner-Crist, freshman Shelby Smith and senior Michelle Dobbs. Freshman Isabel Garon tied for second in the women's pole vault at 3.46 meters. Junior Ade Ayoola was second in the shot put at 11.65 meters.

The Maroon men ended up third in the 4x800-meter relay at 7:50.42. The relay included senior Jeremy Ferguson, sophomore Owen Melia, junior Jacob Amiri and freshman Joe Previdi.
