ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The University of Chicago track and field teams made their outdoor debut at Augustana College's Viking Olympics on Saturday.
The Maroon women were led on the track by senior Nicole VacaGuzman, who won the 800 meters in a time of 2:15.66. Sophomore Ella Parker jumped 1.48 meters in the high jump to take fourth place. First-year Sarika Temme-Bapat placed top 10 in the 1,500 meters as well in 4:59.40 (eighth).
On the men's side, UChicago junior sprinter Tyson Miller finished third in the 200 meters (22.56) and fourth in the 100 meters (11.09). The 5,000-meter race featured two Maroons with first-year Sam Craig in third (15:15.94) and senior Jacob Gosselin in 10th (15:32.74). Sophomore Will Shine crossed the finish line in 9:56.94 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, placing sixth.
Additionally, UChicago participated in Washington University – St. Louis' Distance Carnival. In the women's 5,000 meters, sophomore Sophie Elgamal placed 21st and sophomore Abigail Shoemaker took 35th.
