GENEVA, Ohio – For the third time in her young career, University of Chicago first-year Isabel Maletich earned All-American status, as the rookie just missed out on a second national title with her runner-up finish in the women's long jump on Day 1 of 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championships at the Spire Institute.

Maletich leaped a new personal-best – 6.02 meters, to be exact – set another school record, and earned herself a berth to the U20 USATF Outdoor Championships, set for June 21-23 in Miramar, Fla. She missed out on the title by a mere .05 meters, as UW-Oshkosh's Lauren Wrensch earned the win with her own school record, a leap of 6.07m.

The runner-up finish for Maletich followed her 2019 indoor national championship in the same event and sixth-place finish in the indoor triple jump last March. She still has one more event to go in this year's outdoor championships, as she will compete in the outdoor triple jump on Saturday.

Joining the first-year with outstanding results Thursday was the UChicago women's 4x400 relay squad of Nicole VacaGuzman, Meg Fitzpatrick, Tali Naibryf and Mary Martin, who took second in their heat by .26 seconds and third overall with a time of 3:49.27. The placing earned the squad a spot in Saturday's finals, with Nebraska Wesleyan (3:47.60) and Emory (3:49.01) just ahead in the prelim results.

On the men's side, Maroon first-year Henry Myers competed in the 1,500 prelims, where he took 18th in a strong field. Myers ran a time of 4:03.56 in his first trip to outdoor nationals.

Friday, junior Laura Darcey (high jump) and VacaGuzman (800 prelims) will compete for UChicago, starting with the high jump at 11:30 a.m. ET. The 800 meter prelims are slotted for 4 p.m. ET.

After Day 1, the Maroon women's team stood tied for ninth in the team standings with eight points.
