CHICAGO – In the final tune-up before the conference championships, the University of Chicago track and field teams dominated as hosts of the Margaret Bradley Invitational on Saturday.
The Maroons took the women's team title with 269 points while the men scored 236 to also get the team victory in the 11-team meet. No other team surpassed 100 team points.
All told, the UChicago women won 11 events on the day. The leading performer was Isabel Maletich in the jumps. The sophomore posted an all-time performance in the triple jump, as she set a new school and facility record at 12.58 meters. That mark blew away her previous best of 12.40 meters, which led the nation coming into the day. The 12.58-meter leap is unofficially the fifth-best triple jump in the history of NCAA Division III, according to USTFCCCA.org.
Senior Isabel Garon climbed up the national ranks in the women's pole vault. Her new school record height of 3.83 meters won the event and now ranks in the top five in NCAA Division III this year.
Maletich also picked up a win in the long jump at 5.74 meters. Senior Laura Darcey was a multiple winner as well – she broke the school record in the 60 meters in 7.75, and also netted a high jump of 1.69 meters. Junior Sophie Elgamal passed under the 10-minute barrier to win the 3,000 meters in 9:59.43.
UChicago victories were also provided by senior Mary Martin in the 200 meters, first-year Katarina Birimac in the 5,000 meters, senior Claire Brockway in the one mile, sophomore Kaitlyn Van Baalen in the 800 meters, and the 4x400-meter relay team.
On the men's side, senior Alexander Scott put up another big number in the shot put, winning with a heave of 17.38 meters. He also laid claim to first in the weight throw at 16.35 meters.
Overall, the Maroon men accounted for eight total event wins. Victories were also supplied by junior Will Shine in the one mile, senior Elliott Paintsil in the 400 meters, first-year Alexander Hastings in the 3,000 meters, junior Ted Falkenhayn in the triple jump, first-year Christian Sodano in the pole vault and first-year Charlie Nevins in the 5,000 meters.
