CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago volleyball team, ranked 17th in the most recent NCAA Division III poll, won a pair of matches Saturday on the second day of the Gargoyle Classic at the Ratner Athletics Center.
Chicago defeated Benedictine University (7-9) 25-12, 18-25, 25-15, 25-19 in Saturday's opening contest behind 12 kills and five blocks from sophomore outside hitter Morgan Clark (Purcellville, Va./ Loudon Valley) and 11 kills and four blocks from senior outside hitter Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita).
Junior middle blocker Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) (pictured, left) then collected 15 kills and six blocks to help lead the Maroons (15-1) past Millikin University (12-4) 25-18, 26-24, 24-26, 25-16 in Saturday's nightcap.
Brander and junior libero Samantha Brown (Louisville, Ky./ Mercy) represented the Maroons on the all-tournament team.
Brander led the Maroons with 13 blocks and a .381 hitting percentage in the tournament's four contests, while Brown totaled 82 digs (5.82 per set).
Chicago concludes a six-match homestand Wednesday night against Wisconsin Lutheran College.
