OSHKOSH, Wis. -- Led by all-tournament selections, senior outside hitter Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita) and sophomore setter Nikki DelZenero (Hinsdale, Ill./ Hinsdale Central), the 23rd-ranked University of Chicago volleyball team captured first place at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Pizza Hut Invitational Saturday afternoon.
After winning a pair of matches in pool play Friday night, the Maroons defeated Lakeland College (0-7) 25-15, 25-19, 25-23 in Saturday's pool play finale. Chicago (9-0) then downed the host Titans (4-6) 17-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-21 in the championship match.
Junior middle blocker Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) hit six kills with a .357 percentage, and senior outside hitter Colleen Belak (Louisville, Ky./ Presentation) collected 15 digs in the win over Lakeland.
Smalls then led three Maroons in double-digit kills with 16 as the Maroons rallied from a one-set deficit in the championship match. Junior middle blocker Katie Trela (Glencoe, Ill./ Regina Dominican) finished with 12 kills and seven blocks. Junior libero Samantha Brown (Louisville, Ky./ Mercy Academy) totaled 23 digs.
En route to earning inclusion on the all-tournament team, Smalls recorded 32 kills (2.46 per set), while DelZenero (pictured) was credited with 138 assists (10.62 per set).
Chicago returns to action at the Wheaton (Ill.) Quadrangular next Saturday, Sept. 17.
