ST. LOUIS -- Second-ranked Washington (Mo.) University defeated the 15th-ranked University of Chicago in three sets Saturday night in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship at the Washington Field House.
Washington (34-1) jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the opening set before winning 25-17. The Bears took a quick lead again in the second set, 6-2, and went on to win 25-22. Chicago (30-6) fell behind 13-8 in the third and final set, which the Bears won 25-16.
Senior outside hitter Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita) and sophomore outside hitter Morgan Clark (Purcellville, Va./ Loudon Valley) led the Maroons with six kills apiece.
Junior libero Samantha Brown (Louisville, Ky./ Mercy Academy) and senior outside hitter Colleen Belak (Louisville, Ky./ Presentation) collected 19 and 13 digs, respectively.
Senior libero Ali Meyers (Crystal Lake, Ill./ Crystal Lake South) served two aces, giving her six in two NCAA tournament matches.
Drew Hargrave (12), Meghan Byrne (11), and Lauren Budde (10) finished with double-digit kills for the Bears, who hit .330 for the match.
Saturday's match marked the Maroons' third loss to Washington this season and second in eight days.
Chicago hit a season-low .085 (29-20-106).
Smalls finished her career as Chicago's all-time kills leader with 1,580.
