CHICAGO -- Seventh-ranked Carthage College handed the 17th-ranked University of Chicago volleyball team its first loss of the 2011 campaign in a five-set affair Wednesday at the Ratner Athletics Center.
Making their first homecourt appearance of the year, the 11-1 Maroons dropped a 25-17, 17-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-10 decision to the 13-2 Lady Reds.
Senior outside hitter Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita) and junior middle blocker Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) hit 15 kills apiece, while senior outside hitter Colleen Belak (Louisville, Ky./ Presentation) added 12.
Sophomore setter Nikki DelZenero (Hinsdale, Ill./ Hinsdale Central) (pictured, left) collected a season-high 52 assists.
Chicago lost for only the fourth time in 21 home matches since the start of the 2008 campaign.
Chicago hosts the 11-team Gargoyle Classic Friday and Saturday.
