OSHKOSH, Wis. -- The 23rd-ranked University of Chicago volleyball team won two matches on the opening night of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Pizza Hut Invitational Friday night. With the two victories, the Maroons improved to 7-0 on the year.
Chicago opened the evening with a 25-16, 25-12, 25-15 win over Lawrence University (1-5) behind 11 kills and three aces from senior outside hitter Colleen Belak (Louisville, Ky./ Presentation) and 20 digs from junior libero Samantha Brown (Louisville, Ky./ Mercy Academy). Junior middle blocker Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) collected four blocks, including three solos.
In Friday's second match, the Maroons defeated the University of Wisconsin-Superior (5-1) 25-13, 25-14, 25-17.
Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Clark (Purcellville, Va./ Loudon Valley) led the Maroons with eight kills, while sophomore setter Nikki DelZenero (Hinsdale, Ill./ Hinsdale Central) contributed 31 assists, seven digs, two aces, and two blocks.
Play continues Saturday as the Maroons face Lakeland College at 11 a.m. and an opponent to be determined at 1 p.m.
