WHEATON, Ill. -- Sparked by 17 kills from junior middle blocker Caroline Brander (River Forest, Ill./ Trinity) and 56 assists from sophomore setter Nikki DelZenero (Hinsdale, Ill./ Hinsdale Central), the 16th-ranked University of Chicago volleyball team defeated host Wheaton (Ill.) College 25-19, 19-25, 25-16, 29-27 Friday evening.
With the win, the Maroons improved to 20-2 on the year. Chicago achieved its 20th victory earlier than in any of its previous 39 campaigns.
Brander (pictured, left) committed only two errors in 29 attempts to finish the match with a .517 percentage. DelZenero's (pictured, right) 56 assists were a season high.
Junior middle blocker Katie Trela (Glencoe, Ill./ Regina Dominican) hit at a .611 clip -- the highest by a Maroon this season -- with 12 kills in 18 swings with just one miscue. Junior libero Samantha Brown (Louisville, Ky./ Mercy) collected 24 digs.
The victory marked the Maroons' 21st consecutive win over an unranked Division III opponent and their 51st in 53 matches since Oct. 30, 2009.
Chicago will travel to the University of Rochester next weekend for the second of the season's two University Athletic Association Round Robins.
