ELMHURST, Ill. -- The University of Chicago volleyball team began its competitive season with wins over Adrian College and Coe College at the first day of the Elmhurst College Invitational on Friday.
The Maroons are now 2-0 and came into the year ranked No. 12 in the AVCA top 25 preseason poll.
In the day's opening match, UChicago swept Adrian 3-0 and took the sets 25-18, 25-14, 25-13. Rightside hitter Katie Huntington turned in a very efficient nine kills on 10 attempts. Outside hitters Maren Loe and Jasmine Mobley scored eight kills and seven kills, respectively. The Maroons split up setting duties, as Ragine Graves totaled 20 assists and eight digs while Nikki DelZenero contributed 10 assists and six digs. Libero Eirene Kim finished with eight assists and seven digs while middle blocker Kara Conway had three blocks to go with three kills.
The Maroons wrapped up their day with 3-1 victory over Coe. UChicago dropped the first set 25-10, but effectively shook it off to take the next three 25-20, 25-20, 25-19. Huntington and middle blocker Maggie Vaughn tied for the team lead with nine kills apiece. Mobley put up eight kills and Loe added six kills, nine digs, two aces and two blocks. DelZenero produced 19 assists with 11 digs and two aces. Graves matched her 14 assists with 14 digs. Kim led the defense with 16 digs and also had five assists.
