#14-UChicago volleyball starts out 2-0 at Gargoyle Classic

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Chicago volleyball team stormed back from an 0-2 deficit and knocked off a nationally-ranked team to close out day one of the 2013 Gargoyle Classic on Friday. The host Maroons went 2-0 on the day to improve to 9-4 overall.

UChicago opened action at its home tournament with a 3-0 sweep over Wisconsin Lutheran College. The Maroons led 14-8 in the first set and stayed in control the rest of the way. Junior outside hitter Morgan Barry served up two-straight aces to end the first set 25-19.

The second set was closely contested and the Warriors stayed within two points at 22-20. But a kill and a block from senior middle blocker Maggie Vaughn spurred the Maroons to a 25-20 victory in the second set. Good blocking propelled UChicago midway through the third set and the home team finished off the match 25-18.

The Maroons closed out the night against No. 17-ranked Christopher Newport University and staged a come-from-behind 3-2 victory. CNU's defense down the stretch helped the Captains jump out to a 1-0 lead after taking the first set 25-22. The visitors then went on a 16-3 run in the second set to seize all the momentum with a 25-15 win.

When the third set got rolling, the Maroons started to click on offense. The two sides played evenly, with a 15-15 tie after the midway point. UChicago won six of the next eight points and extended the match with a 25-21 third-set victory.

The offensive execution continued in the fourth set. Sophomore Jasmine Mobley provided the spark with effective swings from her outside hitter position. An 8-5 lead grew to 18-12. Contributions across the front line kept UChicago in control and Mobley ended the set at 25-20 with a kill down the line.

UChicago jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the decisive fifth set, but CNU came back to tie at 6-6. The Maroons stayed focus, recaptured the lead, and rode crucial kills by Mobley and Barry to finish the comeback 15-10.
