Maroons volleyball splits matches at day two of Elmhurst Invite

ELMHURST, Ill. – The University of Chicago volleyball team split its two matches at day two of the Elmhurst College Invitational on Saturday. The No. 17-ranked Maroons ran their record to 1-3 on the season.  

Carthage 3, UChicago 1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-17, 25-17)

In the first set, Carthage and UChicago remained within three points of each other the entire time. Senior outside hitter Morgan Barry smacked a kill to put the Maroons ahead 25-24 and they took the set one point later on a Carthage error, 26-24.

The Maroons bolted ahead midway through the second set, taking a 19-12 lead. However, the Lady Reds tied the score with an 8-1 run. Emily Heuermann tallied two-straight kills at the end to take the set 25-23 and tie the match.

A six-point run in the third set put Carthage in control at 18-11, and the Lady Reds went on to grab the set 25-17. Another pivotal offensive stretch decided the fourth set as well. Carthage's 7-0 run made the score 22-14 and the final score of 25-17 completed the match.

The Maroons were held to 6.7 percent on the attack while Carthage swung at a 21.6 percent clip. UChicago collected 11 team blocks at the net compared to six by the opposition.

UChicago 3, Spalding 1 (25-17, 25-19, 22-25, 25-20)

In the final match of the invitational, UChicago took the lead halfway through the first set against Spalding and kept hold of it. The Maroons closed on a 6-1 run to win 25-17.

The second set played out very similarly to the first. UChicago pulled away down the stretch once again on the back of its offense, winning seven of the last 10 points. Barry totaled nine kills in the set and the team hit for a .318 attack percentage.

Spalding came back in the third set 25-22 to extend the match. The score was tied 15-15 in the fourth when UChicago went on a 7-2 run. The Maroons maintained a three-point lead and junior outside hitter Maren Loe provided the last three kills to win the match at 25-20.

UChicago posted a season-best attacking percentage of 26.4 percent. Barry reached 20 kills for the second time in her career. Loe posted 19 digs to go with her 17 kills. Senior libero Eirene Kim picked up 26 digs and junior setter Ragine Graves handed out 28 assists and added 12 digs.
