Maroon volleyball splits day with win over Alma and loss to Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. – The University of Chicago volleyball team defeated Alma College 3-0 and lost to No. 3-ranked Hope College 3-0 on Saturday. The Maroons evened their record at 4-4 on the season.

UChicago 3, Alma 0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-23)

Trailing 4-2 in the first set, UChicago swung the momentum with a 7-0 run, which included two kills each by senior outside hitter Morgan Barry and junior outside hitter Maren Loe. Junior setter Ragine Graves also scored two aces in that time. The Maroons went up 16-8 midway through and cruised in for a 25-14 set victory.

The second set went to the Maroons as well, 25-22. Two aces by Barry pushed the lead to 22-16 and the team soon took a 2-0 lead in the match. The third set saw Alma go up 20-16, but UChicago responded with six-straight points. Two kills by Loe ended the match at 25-23.

The Maroons hit for a .236 attack percentage with nine aces on serve. Alma hit .183 in the match.

Hope 3, UChicago 0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-19)

The Flying Dutch opened the match strong, going up 16-8 in the opening set en route to a 25-13 victory. UChicago took the early lead in the second set, however, Hope tied the score 9-9 and slowly pulled away down the stretch 25-18. The hosts then wrapped up the match in the third set 25-19.

UChicago's hitters struggled with a .099 attack percentage. Hope hit for a .317 attack percentage as a team.
