UChicago volleyball splits two matches at North Central Tournament

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The University of Chicago volleyball team went 1-1 at North Central College's Tiffany Robinson Memorial Tournament on Friday. The No. 25-ranked Maroons ran their record to 19-8 on the year.

Saint Mary's (Minn.) 3, UChicago 1 (25-22, 25-23, 13-25, 25-18)

The first set played out evenly throughout, with ties at 10-10 and eventually 22-22. Saint Mary's closed out the set from there with three-straight kills, 25-22. In the second set, UChicago went on an 8-1 run to take a 9-5 lead. The Cardinals came back to tie at 12-12 and late in the set, the score was tied again at 20-20. Saint Mary's closed out at 25-23 to go up 2-0.

The Maroons owned the third set, posting 13 kills and no errors on 27 attempts (.481 hitting percentage). UChicago took a 15-4 lead and cruised from there to 25-13. Saint Mary's grabbed the early advantage in the fourth set and hung on throughout. The Cardinals finished the match at 25-18.

The Maroons totaled 43 kills and a .180 attack percentage, while Saint Mary's collected 53 kills and a .196 hitting percentage. UChicago posted 12 team blocks and 12 service aces in the match. Senior Kara Conway and freshman Taylor David anchored the middle of the net with four blocks each.

UChicago 3, Wartburg 0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-16)

The Maroons started strong in the night's final match by winning seven of the first eight points. Wartburg hung in with six unanswered to tie the score at 13-13. UChicago won five-straight points of its own to go up 21-17 and soon won the set 25-20. The team compiled 20 kills with a .375 attack percentage in the opening set.

The second set featured numerous ties and lead changes. Knotted up at 23-23, UChicago took the next two points and a commanding 2-0 lead. An 11-2 Maroon run midway through the third set was capped by three-straight aces from senior outside hitter Morgan Barry. UChicago quickly closed out the sweep at 25-16.

The Maroons served up nine more aces in the match while hitting .242. Wartburg was limited to a .158 attack percentage. Both teams finished with five blocks.
