UChicago volleyball splits a pair at Wisconsin-Whitewater Invite

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The University of Chicago volleyball team earned a five-set victory over University of Wisconsin-Stout and lost in three sets to University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Invite on Saturday.

The No. 11-ranked Maroons ran their season record to 12-4. The Blue Devils fell to 10-9 and the No. 15-ranked Warhawks improved to 14-3. At the conclusion invite, senior outside hitter Maren Loe was named to the All-Tournament Team.

UChicago 3, Wisconsin-Stout 2 (25-13, 25-16, 24-26, 23-25, 15-13)

UChicago blistered UW-Stout on offense in the opening two sets, scoring a combined 31 kills with only four errors (.415 hitting percentage). A 9-2 lead in the first set ballooned to 21-11 before the Maroons took the opener 25-13. An 11-4 run in the second put UChicago in the driver's seat with a two-set lead, 25-16.

An uptick in Maroon attack errors opened the door for the Blue Devils, who eked out a pair of narrow set victories at 26-24 and 25-23. The fifth set went back and forth, with a tie occurring at 13-13. Senior outside hitter Jasmine Mobley promptly delivered two kills in-a-row to clinch the match at 15-13.

Loe was a force on offense, posting the second-highest kill count of her career with 29. She hit .353 in the match with only five errors on 68 attempts. Senior setter Ragine Graves also had a big match, handing out a career-high 56 assists. She was second on the team's defense with 15 digs.

Mobley knocked 16 kills from the outside and freshman middle blocker Sydney Majors posted an efficient 11 kills on 23 attempts. Freshman libero Brooke Watson paced the defense with 21 digs and served up three aces.

Wisconsin-Whitewater 3, UChicago 0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-21)

The match against the Warhawks was UChicago's fourth against a nationally-ranked opponent this year. The first set went poorly for the Maroons, who committed more attack errors (9) than kills (8). Wisconsin-Whitewater took advantage with a 12-3 run and won the opening set 25-19.

The Warhawks kept up the pressure from there and grabbed the second set 25-16. The hosts finished off the match by hitting .355 in the third set to earn the sweep, 25-21. It marked UChicago's first loss in fewer than five sets.

Offensively, Loe led with 15 kills. Graves put together another double-double with 22 assists and 12 digs. Watson tallied 14 more digs – her 12th match with double-digit digs this season.
