CHICAGO – A stifling defensive effort by the University of Chicago volleyball team resulted in a 3-0 sweep of visiting Illinois Institute of Technology on Friday night.
The Maroons improved to 2-3 and dropped the Scarlet Hawks to 3-2.
UChicago 3, IIT 0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-15)
The first set got away from IIT early as UChicago made a big charge after the 13th point. Three attack errors by IIT and two service aces from sophomore rightside hitter Sarah Muisenga helped UChicago go on a 6-0 run to go ahead 13-6. But that was only the beginning. The Maroons caught fire and reeled off 12-straight points to dominate the opening set 25-9. Senior middle hitter Katie LaPorte provided five kills by herself during the run.
After a tie at 4-4 in the second set, the hosts began to slowly pull away. Soon the Maroons found themselves ahead 14-8. But another huge run put the set to bed with UChicago closing on an 11-3 streak to win 25-13.
In the third and deciding set, the Maroons ran away right from the start. A 13-3 advantage put the result out of doubt and the match ended at 25-15.
IIT was limited to a negative hitting percentage of -.036 thanks to 21 errors versus 17 kills. The Scarlet Hawks also had 55 digs, three blocks and one ace.
UChicago demonstrated good court coverage and dug the ball consistently all night. The Maroons hit a season-high .267 (43 kills, 12 errors, 116 attempts) overall with 63 digs, four blocks and eight aces.
