Maroon volleyball beats Brandeis and Carnegie Mellon at UAA Round Robin #1

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Chicago volleyball team started off the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #1 on a high note with a 3-0 win over Brandeis University and a 3-2 upset of No. 16-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday.

The Maroons extended their win streak to seven matches, improving 10-4 on the year.


UChicago 3, Brandeis 0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-17)

UChicago made quick work of its opening match, sweeping an opponent for the sixth time this season. The Maroons hit .308 in the opening set to get ahead 25-22. A 6-0 run in the second set put them up 11-5, and they closed strong by scoring the final seven points to grab the set 25-17. UChicago then finished off the third set by an identical 25-17 mark.

Sophomore rightside hitter Sarah Muisenga posted team highs with 13 kills and 14 digs. UChicago hit .209 in the match (37 kills, 13 errors, 115 attempts) while also totaling 53 digs, five blocks and serving up eight aces.

On the other side of the net, Brandeis hit .112 (32-19-116) with 56 digs, four blocks and one ace.

UChicago 3, Carnegie Mellon 2 (25-22, 27-25, 19-25, 17-25, 15-12)

In its third match of the season against a nationally-ranked opponent, UChicago sprung out to a two-set lead against the host Tartans. After falling behind 16-12 in the first set, the Maroons eventually came back to tie at 18-18. Sophomore outside hitter Audrey Scrafford then posted three-straight kills for the Maroons, who grabbed the advantage 25-22.

The visitors looked to be in total control up 19-9 in the second set. But the Tartans roared all the way back to take a 24-23 lead. UChicago held sway however, winning 27-25.

The third and fourth sets were a struggle as the Maroon offense ground to a halt, hitting for a .005 percentage combined. CMU's 25-19 and 25-17 wins forced a decisive fifth set. After a tie at 10-10, UChicago came up clutch and delivered the victory, 15-12. It marked only the second five-set match the Maroons have played this season.

UChicago posted a .176 hitting percentage (60-24-204) with 96 digs, nine blocks and eight aces. Scrafford tallied a season-best 20 kills and also contributed four block assists. Muisenga posted 19 kills and a career-high 21 digs, while freshman outside hitter Anabella Pinton was also a dual contributor with 15 kills and a season-high 25 digs. Senior libero Mary Claire Tuohy led the defense with 30 digs, while senior setter Erin Risk handed out 45 assists to go with 17 digs.

CMU hit .131 (64-36-213) with 109 digs, nine blocks and six aces.
