UChicago volleyball knocks off Washington-St. Louis to conclude UAA Round Robin #1

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Chicago volleyball team finished up its weekend action with a perfect 3-0 conference record after upsetting Washington University-St. Louis 3-1 at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #1 on Sunday.

The Maroons (11-4 record) have won eight-straight matches. It marks their fifth all-time win over Washington-St. Louis since 1986. The No. 15-ranked Bears dropped to 12-7.

UChicago 3, Washington-St. Louis 1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 27-25)

The Maroons grabbed a lead midway through the first set and didn't let go en route to a 25-21 opening win. UChicago hit .342 in the set, with its final three points scored by sophomore rightside hitter Sarah Muisenga.

WashU got some momentum on its side in the second set to hold a slim edge down the stretch. A service error by UChicago on set point helped the Bears even the match up, 25-23.

The third set was all UChicago. The Maroons hit .438 in the set with 15 kills and only one error. An 8-3 run down the stretch gave them a 2-1 set advantage, 25-18.

The fourth set saw runs back and forth, with UChicago positioning itself for the victory at 23-20. WashU charged back to tie at 25-25 to keep things interesting. But a kill by Muisenga and a double block by senior middle hitter Katie LaPorte and freshman outside hitter Anabella Pinton ended the match, 27-25.

Both sides recorded 56 kills, as UChicago hit .272 versus .229 for WashU. Service errors dogged both teams as they combined for 25 total. The Maroons posted seven blocks while the Bears had 8.5.

Muisenga continued her hot streak offensively with a career-best 20 kills alongside 14 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Audrey Scrafford was next in the kills list with 16, while Pinton's double-double included 11 kills and 12 digs. Senior setter Erin Risk surpassed 40 assists for the sixth time this season – she finished with 47 assists and 14 digs.
