CHICAGO – The University of Chicago volleyball team wrapped up the UChicago Invite with a 3-1 loss to Juniata College on Saturday.
The Maroons fell to 11-7 while the No. 11-ranked Eagles improved to 15-5.
Juniata 3, UChicago 1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19)
The Eagles jumped out quickly and took the first set 25-17. But their offense ran into trouble in the second set with 12 attack errors (.043 hitting percentage). UChicago capitalized on its end and closed the second set strong on a 7-2 run to even the match up, 25-20.
The third set swung back and forth, as UChicago rallied from 16-10 down by scoring eight-straight points on freshman middle hitter Anne Marie Stifter's serve. However, Juniata recorded the final three points of the set with two kills and an ace to win 25-23.
The fourth set was tied at 10-10 before the visitors took nine of the next 11 points to build a lead and eventually close out the victory, 25-19.
UChicago hit for a .199 percentage (43 kills, 16 errors, 136 attempts) with 53 digs, five blocks and eight aces. Sophomore rightside hitter Sarah Muisenga was the team leader with 16 kills and sophomore outside hitter Audrey Scrafford reached double-digits in kills with 10. Senior setter Erin Risk tallied 30 assists and 15 digs.
The Eagles was most effective on serve with 17 aces. Juniata hit .184 (55-27-152) with 72 digs and three blocks.
