WHEATON, Ill. – The University of Chicago volleyball team saw its four-match win streak snapped at Wheaton College 3-1 on Thursday.
The Maroons dropped to 15-8 while the Thunder improved to 10-15.
Wheaton 3, UChicago 1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-20, 27-25)
The host Thunder ran out to a 13-4 lead in the opener thanks to nine-straight points. Wheaton led 23-15 before UChicago made things interesting to get within 24-21. The home team then ended with a kill to take the set 25-21.
Midway through the second set, the two sides exchanged runs until Wheaton held set point at 24-22. However, this time the Maroons completed the comeback and captured the set 27-25 on a solo block by freshman middle hitter Madison Pearson.
The third set featured a late run by the Thunder, scoring six-straight points and taking the match lead once more by winning the set 25-20. Wheaton looked to be in control of set four, taking leads of 9-3 and 16-9. However, UChicago held fast and slowly climbed their way back in. The Maroons held off three match points and even took a lead at 25-24 after a service ace. But Wheaton countered with two kills and a block to finish off the match, 27-25.
Sophomore outside hitter Audrey Scrafford compiled a season-high 21 kills while swinging at a .353 clip. Sophomore rightside hitter Sarah Muisenga was next highest in kills with 14 kills. Senior setter Erin Risk totaled 46 assists and 11 digs. Senior libero Mary Claire Tuohy put up 27 digs.
UChicago recorded a .256 hitting percentage (65 kills, 20 errors, 176 attempts) to go with five aces and three blocks. Wheaton hit .247 (59-18-166) with 11 aces and seven blocks.
