Maroon volleyball loses to Washington-St. Louis 3-1 in UAA third-place match

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Chicago volleyball team lost a 3-1 decision in the third-place match versus Washington University-St. Louis at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Saturday.

The Maroons end the regular season with an 18-11 record while the No. 14-ranked Bears move to 22-10.

The NCAA will announce the Division III Women's Volleyball Championship field in an online selection show on Monday, Nov. 7 at 11:30 AM (CT):

Washington-St. Louis 3, UChicago 1 (25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 26-24)

The host Bears maintained control of the first set from the second point onwards. WashU took leads of 6-1 and 20-11 en route to a 25-18 win. The second set swung to UChicago initially at 5-2, but five-straight points by the Bears put them back up 7-5. The score stood knotted at 20-20 following back-to-back kills by sophomore outside hitter Audrey Scrafford and freshman middle hitter Madison Pearson. But WashU held firm and scored the last five points to take a two-set lead, 25-20.

In the third set, the Maroons turned up the offensive pressure by hitting for a .419 percentage. Three-consecutive attack errors by the hosts helped the visitors build a 15-12 lead midway through. Two kills each from sophomore rightside hitter Sarah Muisenga and freshman middle hitter Anne Marie Stifter down the stretch allowed UChicago to halve the deficit with a 25-20 victory.

The fourth set saw efficient showings from each team as they hit for a combined .352 percentage. UChicago held initial advantages of 7-2 and 15-8. However, the Bears stormed back to tie at 20-20. WashU ended the match with two kills at 26-24.

The Maroons hit .261 (54 kills, 17 errors, 142 attempts) as a team while the Bears swung at a .338 (63-14-145) success rate. Scrafford's 16 kills marked the sixth time in the past eight matches she's totaled at least that many. Muisenga's well-rounded effort included 14 kills and 11 digs, while Stifter had 11 kills and 12 digs herself. Senior setter Erin Risk compiled a team-high 18 digs along with 44 assists.
