Maroon Volleyball Sweeps Through Gargoyle's Final Day; Starts 4-0

CHICAGO – Opening weekend turned out to be one of perfection for the University of Chicago volleyball team, as the Maroons took down two more opponents: Cornell and Albion on Saturday's final day of the Gargoyle Classic.

The Maroons open 2018 with a perfect 4-0 record after defeating Kalamazoo and Rose-Hulman in straight sets on Friday.

The All-Tournament Team included three Maroons: MVP Emma Griffith, Anne Marie Stifter and Madison Pearson.

Seniors Sarah Muisenga and Audrey Scrafford each had 31 kills over the weekend and Anabella Pinton added 30 for a solid offense that hit .283 at the net. Sophomore Emma Griffith dished out 156 assists (11.14 per set) over the four matches and libero Katherine Wilson led the team in digs (60) and while adding 10 service aces. Junior Madison Pearson also had a solid weekend with 25 kills and a team-high 11 service aces.

The Maroons pulled off a thrilling win in Saturday's opener, defeating the Rams (0-1) by scores of 25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 22-25, and 15-12.

The back and forth match would come down to the final set, where the Maroons took hold early by scoring the game's first five points. UChicago would go on to lead 10-3 before the Rams charged back with an 8-3 run of their own to make it 13-11. Pinton (eight kills) and Scrafford, however, would deliver the final two kills to give the Maroons – who hit for 10 kills and had just one error in the fifth – the match.  

Scrafford had a monster game at the net, swinging for a team-high 18 kills at a crisp .381 clip. Muisenga also finished with double-digit kills with 15 (.367) and Pearson added 11. Griffith continued to direct the offense efficiently with 54 assists and chipped in 19 digs and Wilson added 14 digs on the back line.

UChicago won the match despite being out-hit by the Rams, .333-.306, and Cornell also won the blocking battle, finishing with 10 block assists to the Maroons' four.

Pinton added eight kills, Muisenga had nine digs and Wilson recorded four service aces to round out UChicago's leaders.

UChicago dominated early and often in the day's final match, allowing the Maroons to shuffle their lineup without losing a step. The Maroons defeated the Brits (1-2) by scores of 25-11, 25-16, and 25-18 to complete the weekend 4-0.

Pinton led the Maroons with 15 kills (.406), while teammates Julianna Kalil (seven kills), Fredericka Paulson (five kills) and Anne Marie Stifter (five kills) also joined in the offensive action.

Griffith finished with 35 assists and eight digs and Wilson led the defense with 15 digs in the victory. UChicago's offense hit for .296 and held the Brits to just .059, including a negative -.100 in the final set (six kills, nine errors).

In total, 13 different player saw action for the Maroons in the match.
