CHICAGO – The University of Chicago volleyball team played a marathon match with North Park University before emerging triumphant in five sets, then followed up with an efficient 3-0 sweep of Concordia University Chicago on Monday.
The Maroons improved their season record to 6-0.
UChicago 3, North Park 2 (25-14, 25-18, 19-25, 33-35, 17-15)
The night's opening match had no shortage of dramatics. UChicago looked primed for a three-set win after marching over the Vikings 25-14 and 25-18. The opening set saw North Park held to only three kills with eight errors committed for a -.217 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, the Maroons hit .333 in the first and second sets to exert control of the proceedings.
However, a 13-3 run by the hosts turned the third set around at 19-12 and NPU found its momentum to halve the deficit at 25-19. The fourth set turned into an endurance test with 68 combined points scored. Neither side would give the other an inch, and NPU fended off five set points to keep the score tied up. The home side took advantage of a service error then put away a kill of its own to tie the match up, 35-33.
The Vikings looked poised to close it out in the fifth, giving themselves match points at 14-11. But a pair of NPU errors and a clutch kill from junior outside hitter Anabella Pinton tied the score up. Two double blocks on the outside gave UChicago a match point of its own, and Pinton closed it out with her 16th kill of the match to win it 17-15.
Pinton and junior middle hitter Madison Pearson led the offense with 16 kills apiece. Pearson was particularly efficient with a .520 hitting percentage offensively and eight total blocks defensively. Senior rightside hitter Sarah Muisenga tallied 12 kills, 16 digs and three blocks. Sophomore setter Emma Griffith handed out 43 assists to go with 12 digs and six blocks.
The two teams combined for 17 aces but also 30 service errors. UChicago hit .216 in the match with 12 team blocks.
UChicago 3, Concordia Chicago 0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-18)
The nightcap was a much shorter affair. The Maroons picked up their fourth shutout of the young season and didn't allow more than 18 points in any of the three sets. Offensively, UChicago was sharp throughout, only committing seven total attack errors en route to a .380 team hitting percentage. The highpoint came when the Maroons hit .452 in a dominant second set.
A 14-2 run closed out the first set in style, which featured five kills in-a-row from senior outside hitter Audrey Scrafford. Another 13-2 streak ended the second set as well.
Pinton (.500) and Muisenga (.562) combined for 20 kills versus only two attack errors in 34 attempts. Griffith posted 33 assists and eight digs.
